Rootstock-Trifoliata Our citrus trees are grafted/budded onto trifoliata rootstock. Trifoliata is the standard rootstock for citrus trees in NZ with excellent hardiness to difficult soil conditions, cold soil temperatures and has good vigor and produces heavy crops. A trifoliata grafted citrus tree will grow naturally to 1.5-2.5m tall, but responds to pruning for height control easily. Prune for height control in spring, early summer, or autumn. Don't prune in summer as it will attract the native citrus borer to your tree.

Rootstock growth (‘suckers’) that sprouts from below the graft will look different to the variety growth with a distinctive dark green colour small tri-lobed leaves and many sharp spikes – this growth should be cleanly snipped off. This growth does not indicate a problem with your tree and is quite normal in young trees, Once your tree matures this rootstock sprouting will occur less often.

Frost

The new growth on young citrus trees can be damaged by frost so it is a good idea to watch nighttime temps during Winter & Spring and cover them as needed. Most established citrus trees will tolerate the frost levels we get here in the Waikato/BOP area. However, these trees listed will require a permanent frost-free site. Kaffir Lime, Hawaiian Grapefruit
